Grand Café

Opened in 1874 inside the newly founded Grand Hotel, the café quickly became the daily meeting place for Norway's leading writers, artists and explorers — Henrik Ibsen ate lunch here so regularly that his seat by the window is still marked today. Edvard Munch was a regular too, at one point reportedly offering to trade his painting 'Sick Girl' for 100 free steak dinners. More than a century and a half later, it remains in continuous operation in the same building on Karl Johans gate.
