Built in 1880–1882 to a design by Heinrich Ernst Schirmer and his son Adolf Schirmer, this red-brick Neo-Renaissance building was purpose-built to house the National Gallery of Norway, which had opened elsewhere in 1842 as the Norwegian States Central Museum for Visual Arts. It held the national art collection for well over a century, until the collection relocated to the new National Museum building at Vestbanen in 2022. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage listed both its exterior and interior for protection in 2012, and in 1926 it received an award from the Houen Foundation for good architecture.
