Erkki Huttunen designed Ainanlinna in 1952 as an apartment and commercial building on Kauppakatu, replacing the Art Nouveau department store J. Blomin liiketalo that had stood on the same corner since 1904 before its demolition in 1950. Like the earlier building, Ainanlinna took its name from Aina Lang, the longtime owner of the plot, and its clean functionalist facade marks the shift in central Tampere's commercial architecture from decorative Art Nouveau storefronts to the plainer postwar style.
