Charles Bassi, the Italian-born architect who also designed Turku's neoclassical City Hall, completed Tampere Old Church in 1824 as one of the young industrial town's earliest substantial stone buildings. Its plain, symmetrical neoclassical form and modest bell tower reflect the restrained civic architecture typical of early-nineteenth-century Finnish parish churches, built well before Tampere's rapid growth into a major manufacturing centre later in the century.
