Wivi Lönn, one of the first women to practise architecture professionally in Finland, designed Tampere's central fire station in 1908, giving the building an Art Nouveau facade with a lookout tower originally used to spot smoke across the growing industrial city. Lönn built a substantial career in Tampere and Helsinki at a time when few women were admitted to architectural practice, and the fire station remains one of her best-preserved public commissions.
