Esa Piironen designed Tampere Hall, completed in 1990 as one of the largest congress and concert venues in the Nordic countries, built beside the city's railway yards to host both international conferences and orchestral performances under one roof. Its postmodern massing, with layered geometric volumes in brick and glass, marked a deliberate departure from the more austere modernism of Tampere's earlier civic buildings.
