Aarne Ervi won the competition for Tampere City Hall and completed the building in 1967, giving the municipal administration a modernist counterpart to the historicist Old City Hall it replaced as the seat of city government. Its restrained rectilinear form and material palette are typical of Finnish civic modernism of the 1960s, prioritising function and clarity over the ornament of the buildings surrounding it downtown.
