Eero Seppälä designed the current Tampere railway station building in 1936, replacing an earlier station as rail traffic through the city grew alongside its textile and engineering industries. Its clean, symmetrical functionalist form, with a tall clock tower marking the main entrance, gave Tampere a station scaled to its status as Finland's second-largest inland city.
