Reima Pietilä won the competition for Kaleva Church in 1959 and completed the building in 1966, giving it a distinctive fish-shaped plan — a nod to the ichthys, an early Christian symbol — with a soaring concrete envelope that curves and tapers rather than following a conventional rectangular nave. It remains one of the clearest expressions of Pietilä's organic, sculptural approach to modernism, treating the building's form as an extension of its symbolic and topographic setting rather than a simple functional box.
