Tampere Art Museum

Carl Ludvig Engel designed this building in 1838 as a crown granary, making it the third-oldest surviving structure in Tampere and reputedly home to the city's oldest exposed brick facade. Nearly a century later, in 1930, architect Hilja Gestrin converted the plain storage building into gallery space, and it reopened in 1931 as Finland's first art museum located outside Helsinki — giving a utilitarian Engel building an entirely new life as a cultural institution.
