Birger Federley designed Laukonlinna in 1907 as an apartment and commercial building in the Art Nouveau style, one of several such buildings Federley completed in Tampere in the years before the First World War. Its ornamented facade and turret details reflect the ambitions of Tampere's commercial class to give the rapidly industrialising city a townscape to match its economic growth.
