Tammerkoski Rapids Power Plant

Bertel Strömmer designed the power plant harnessing the Tammerkoski rapids in 1932, one of several functionalist industrial commissions he completed along the same waterway that had powered Tampere's textile and paper mills since the nineteenth century. Its clean concrete lines reflect the way Finnish functionalism was applied as readily to industrial infrastructure as to housing and civic buildings in the interwar years, and the plant continues to generate electricity from the rapids today.
