Vilho Kolho designed the Pyynikki observation tower in 1929 on the Pyynikki ridge, a narrow esker separating lakes Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi, giving visitors a viewing platform above the pine forest below. Built from stone and timber in a style suited to its wooded ridge setting, it remains a popular vantage point over Tampere and is known equally for the small café at its base that has sold doughnuts to visitors for decades.
