Lars Sonck designed the Archangel Michael's Church in 1899, early in a career that would make him the leading figure of Finnish National Romanticism, working here in a rugged Gothic Revival vocabulary of dark granite and steep gables for Turku's Orthodox garrison congregation. Its asymmetric massing and heavy stonework mark a clear departure from the lighter neoclassical Orthodox church Engel had built in the same city seventy years earlier.
