Turku Orthodox Church

Carl Ludvig Engel, the architect who laid out much of neoclassical Helsinki after it became the Grand Duchy's capital, designed Turku's Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in 1839 for the city's Russian Orthodox garrison and merchant community. Its restrained neoclassical exterior, with a shallow dome and pedimented portico, was intended to fit into Engel's wider vocabulary for Russian imperial institutions in Finland, distinguishing it from the more overtly Russian Revival churches built later in the century.
