August Krook designed Turku Synagogue in 1912 for a Jewish community that had grown steadily in the city since the 1858 imperial decree permitting Jewish settlement in a handful of Finnish garrison towns. Its Art Nouveau facade, with a rounded gable and patterned brickwork, was a deliberate departure from the heavier historicist synagogues built elsewhere in the Russian Empire in the same period, and it remains in active use as one of only two functioning synagogues in Finland.
