Turku Central railway station

Väinö Vähäkallio designed the current Turku Central Station building after the city's original 1876 station, opened for the first railway line to Tampere, was demolished in 1938 to make way for a larger terminal able to handle the traffic that had grown since the 1899 Helsinki line opened. The replacement building, completed in 1940, gave Turku a station scaled to its role as one of Finland's two principal rail gateways alongside Helsinki.
