Matti Aaltonen, together with his wife and fellow architect Irma Aaltonen, designed the museum that bears his sculptor father Wäinö Aaltonen's name, working with the artist's own input before construction began in 1965; the museum opened in September 1967. Its top-lit galleries were arranged by scale, with an eleven-metre sculpture hall reserved for Wäinö Aaltonen's monumental works and smaller rooms built for miniatures, paintings, and graphic art, a layout shaped directly by the sculptor's own sense of how his work should be seen.
