Harald Smedberg designed Turku's bus station in 1938 in the clean, horizontal functionalist style that dominated Finnish civic architecture in the years just before the Second World War. Its long canopy and streamlined massing were built to handle the growing regional bus network that had begun to compete with rail as Turku's connection to its surrounding countryside.
