Valter Jung designed this palace for Hans von Rettig, a member of the tobacco-manufacturing family that had built its fortune in Turku since the mid-1800s, with the first drawings completed in late 1927 and the finished house occupied by the family by December 1928. Its baroque classicism, with a facade oriented toward the Aura river, was intended as a grand private residence in the heart of the old city; the Matti Koivurinta Foundation bought the building in 1991 and it now houses the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova museum of archaeology and contemporary art.
