Woldemar Baeckman, who served for two decades as the de facto house architect for Åbo Akademi University, designed the Sibelius Museum in 1968 as a showcase for the university's music archive, first established as a musicology seminar in the 1920s and named for Jean Sibelius with the composer's own blessing in 1949. Its raw concrete forms and top-lit galleries are counted among the most complete expressions of 1960s Finnish brutalism, and the building holds a place in the Docomomo register of significant modern Finnish architecture.
