Erik Bryggman began building the Resurrection Chapel at Turku's cemetery in the spring of 1939, only for construction to be interrupted by the outbreak of the Winter War; it was finally completed in 1941, on the eve of the Continuation War, at a moment when the deaths of soldiers weighed heavily on how Bryggman thought about a building meant to comfort the grieving. Visitors pass through a shadowed vestibule before the hall opens into bright, forest-filtered light beneath a raised triumphal arch separating the nave from the altar, a sequence widely considered the high point of Bryggman's career and one of the defining works of Nordic Classicism moving into functionalism.
