Alvar Aalto designed the Turun Sanomat newspaper's offices and printing works in 1930, and the building is regarded as his first fully realised work of functionalism, breaking decisively from the classicism of his earlier Finnish commissions. Its stepped concrete facade of continuous glazing and cantilevered balconies was engineered to bring maximum daylight into the working newsroom and print floor, a functionalist logic Aalto would carry into his later industrial and office buildings.
