Carl Christoffer Gjörwell the Younger designed the Old Academy Building in 1815 as the main building of the Royal Academy of Turku, the university founded in the city in 1640. When the 1827 fire and the subsequent relocation of the university to Helsinki emptied the building of its original purpose, it was repurposed for the Turku Court of Appeal, a function the neoclassical building still serves today.
