Carl Ludvig Engel designed the Vartiovuori Observatory in 1819 for the Royal Academy of Turku, Finland's oldest university, making it one of the earliest purpose-built astronomical observatories in the Nordic countries. Its neoclassical rotunda sits on Vartiovuorenmäki hill overlooking the city, and though the university itself moved to Helsinki after Turku's great fire of 1827, the observatory building survived and today houses a maritime and astronomical museum.
